Shielding her from his pain.
It had been over half an hour ago that he'd gotten up from next to her, not being able to stand their close proximity for another second ... Dark clouds moved forth and on offering momentary shade from the mid - day sun and promising a heavy shower later. She watched as his shadow swung with the changes in the sky and tried to swallow the lump permanently lodged in her throat. Of course, it didn't work.
Slowly, she lifted her head and focused her tear soaked eyes on her everything. His back was stiff, a position he had been maintaining for quite some time now. Still and curt. Almost as if reflexive, his head twitched the second he felt her eyes on him. But he refrained from giving her any indication that he noticed. Her mouth opened slightly as she sucked in a strangled breath of air. Her eyes closed and finally - the tears fell.
Almost as if it were precisely planned, the heavy clouds took up that very moment to she their weight and her tears mingled with the fresh downpour echoing her mood. Her lips moved and a sound that was too weak to be even considered as a whisper shocked through the air and he heard it even from several feet away, "I'm sorry..."
That shattered him. His knees buckled as wet jeans splashed in mud and hard fists slammed the concrete. A purely animalistic growl ripped from his throat and his head pounded hard with pressure. His reaction cut through her like ice and she bit her lip hard enough to draw blood.
"Don't! Don't ... Don't say you're sorry in a pathetic attempt to salvage this - salvage Us! You left! YOU LEFT! Do you hear me?! You left and now .. Now it's too late to come back and try to reclaim your place in my life. It's over."
His voice broke on the last word.
Several moments passed as neither made as sound. The pitter of rain dwindled down until it was no more than a drizzle. He picked himself up off the ground and made his way towards her. Her eyes were still clenched shut and the tears were hot on her cool cheeks. He gently took off his jacket and knelt over her shoulders. He eased her lip from her teeth and used his thumb to wipe away the blood.
"Please don't go..."
Her blue eyes opened into his grey ones and the pain in hers was mimicked in his. He leaned forward and placed a soft, feather light kiss on her lips before pulling away.
She grabbed his face and forced him to look at her, "Please! Please..."
He put his hands on hers and slid them down his face, dropping them so they fell limply to her sides. She watched as he walked away, his unspoken words ringing in both of their heads.
